The photographs were made throughout Georgia in the autumn of 2022 and spring of 2023. What started out as photographing a trip across the country, developed into an observation of the current tensions in Georgia following the influx of Russian immigrants after the start of the war in Ukraine. The portraits encompass three different perspectives: local Georgians, Russian nationals and other foreign visitors who, like myself prior to arrival, were unaware of just how complicated the relationship between these two countries really is. The events photographed and mentioned are a precursor to both the recent election that took place in Georgia on October 26th 2024, and the ongoing protests resulting from the ruling Georgian Dream party's controversial decision to delay Georgia's bid to join the European Union.—----------------------—----------------------—------------------ 'three circles around the sea' was published by Out Of Place Books at the end of 2024, more information can be found here.&nbsp; A solo exhibition of the work was presented at Levels Gallery, Berlin which combined prints, slideshows and original music composed for the project. residency at the Matca Space for Photography in Hanoi, Vietnam. While there, I struggled to make a new piece of work and jumped between a number of different topics. Everything from migration, to a portraiture piece on a friend and her 6 year old daughter, to avoiding stereotypes and anything to do with the war. In the end, it kind of became a project about making a project, about looking for something but not necessarily finding it.The text at the top is made up of different diary entries I made throughout my time there and combined with the photos, they touch on the different topics I wanted to, or didn’t want to, make a project about at some point, as well as the different things I was struggling with. The first time I visited there was a Saturday. After stepping off the train it seemed like a typical little town, and even reminded me a bit of home: there was someone picking blackberries, teenagers drinking in the park, a band playing music in the forest, there was a local ice cream shop but it was closed. On May 1st, 1945 in the space of one day, approximately 1,000 people committed suicide in Demmin. The suicides occurred during a mass panic that was provoked by two main causes, propaganda spread by The Wehrmacht which claimed "it's better to kill yourself than to live in defeat", and by atrocities the soldiers of the Soviet Red Army committed, who had sacked the town the day before. Although death toll estimates vary, it is acknowledged to be the largest mass suicide ever recorded in Germany, and was part of a mass suicide wave amongst the German population at the time.These photographs are a quiet look at Demmin 80 years later.
